I really was bottoming out, except for the fact that I had a lot farther to fall. She liked me but I could see she wasn’t willing to tie her balloon to my anchor. I really wanted her to, but at the same time I found her hard to get along with, I thought she didn’t seem very committed to the struggle, whatever the struggle was. But when I look back, of course she was committed in a realer way.

There’s a notion in writing that you have to have experiences to write about. There’s an additional notion that the experiences in question might ought to be out-of-the-ordinary experiences, as if ordinary experiences are not worthy of consideration. There’s even a notion that’s not uncommon that downright tawdry experiences are obligations for writers, especially male writers, especially in the 80’s, probably even more so in the 70’s.

I think you will find this notion all over the place. I don’t buy it.
